Day 16 - Ideal Harp
This one is easy for me. My harp is my ideal harp. It was my dream harp when I got it, and 19 years later… I still feel the same way. When I first purchased it, there was a five-year trade-in option in case I wanted to move to a pedal harp. At the time, I thought I might—but I loved my harp and never made the switch. Pedal harps are beautiful instruments, but they’re also much heavier (and come with those well-known pedals). At this point, with carpal tunnel in the picture, I don’t think going heavier would be the best choice for me. My lever harp has served me so well. Yes, there are a few pieces that are better suited for pedal harp—but I’ve never had to turn down a gig because of it. And since my goal has never been to play in an orchestra full-time, it’s been exactly the right fit. (That said, I have enjoyed being a guest harpist with orchestras when the opportunity came up!) Choosing an ideal harp really depends on your goals, your lifestyle, and what you want to do with it. If that’s something you’re exploring, I’m always happy to help walk through those options.
