Day 10 - How I Started -
When I was a young teenager, I decided I wanted to play the harp. I don’t remember exactly what sparked it—I just remember the feeling. It was one of those quiet desires that stayed in the back of my mind. I also knew it was an expensive instrument, so I didn’t say much about it. I just prayed about it and left it there. Not long after that, we were visiting friends and talking about music and instruments. Out of nowhere, my dad mentioned that he wanted my sister, Charity, to play the harp. I remember thinking… wait, what? Later that night, I asked her about it. She had no idea why he said that and very quickly let me know she had no interest in playing the harp. When I asked if she’d mind if I talked to Dad about it instead, her response was basically, “please do.” So I did. And in the end, Dad said he didn’t really care which of us played the harp—he just had a desire for one of his children to learn. Looking back, it still feels like such a specific and timely moment. I started harp lessons in October of 2001 and went twice a week. Mondays were lesson days—I’d arrive early to warm up, have my lesson, and then keep practicing until my mom came to pick me up. On Wednesdays, I’d practice while she ran errands or took my siblings to their lessons. It added up to about four hours a week, and little by little, that quiet desire turned into something much bigger. And here I am, still playing all these years later.
